Hidden For Over 60 Years
For over 60 years, the "superstar" Geisha plant lay hidden at the legendary farm, Hacienda la Esmeralda, waiting to be discovered. But in 2004, it was noted that some of the coffee plants looked different than the others. It turns out, those plants, whose coffee cherries had previously been combined with other plant varietals on the farm, traced their roots back to an heirloom plant varietal from Mount Geisha, Ethiopia. They had been transplanted from Ethiopia to Panama back in 1936 as part of a British expedition.
Once discovered, the Geisha cherries were separated out into their own micro-lot and released. The results shook the world of coffee! Most closely related to the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe plant, well known among coffee aficionados— the newly unearthed coffee combined the floral and tea-like characteristics of Yirgacheffe with the fruit forward notes found in Central/South American coffees—a rejuvenated cup from an ancient plant.
After its release, Geisha began selling for extravagant amounts of money, from $800 to a record breaking $2500 per pound! But, the plant varietal also began to be adopted by farming communities worldwide, specifically in Colombia and Costa Rica—eventually making its price more accessible. But, because it is difficult to grow, only the most skilled farmers attempt it.
Geisha's intense fruit flavors, tea-like characteristics, and floral bouquet are among the reasons that makes it a favorite among coffee competitors. In fact, between 2011-2019, seven of the World Barista Champions won with a Geisha coffee. Grown at the highest peaks on a farm, these rare micro-lots are a great way for coffee farmers to showcase their exceptional farming skills through this cup of perfection.
Guatemala La Revuelta Geisha
We are always excited to hear that one of our farming partners, all of whom are exceptional farmers, has decided to showcase their growing talents with one of these demanding, but super rewarding coffees. So, when Ben was in Guatemala visiting Christian Starry last year, he was thrilled to hear that they had planted their first Geisha crop. With tasting notes of Pineapple, Mango, Orange, Jasmine Tea, and Vanilla, this La Revuelta Geisha is a perfect example of the unique flavors this varietal offers.
Our La Revuelta Geisha availability is limited. Check out our Single Origin offerings and grab the Geisha while you can!
