If you've never tried making pour over coffee, tis the season! They are fun to use and make full flavored cups. Here's what you'll need to get started.
Our Equipment Recommendations:
1. Burr Grinder
Burr grinders (not blade mill) are essential to break coffee into uniform pieces, giving you a sweeter cup. The Opus grinder is a great starter grinder.
2. Gooseneck Kettle
A gooseneck kettle gives the control needed for pouring water. We prefer electric kettles, like the Stagg, as the stovetop ones will discolor with use.
3. Scale
The precision using a scale makes a huge impact on the quality of coffee. A great entry level scale is the Hario Drip Scale.
4. Pour Over Brewer
Two of our favorite brewers are the Chemex and the Stagg [XF] brewer. Both are easy to use, nicely designed and yield beautiful results.
Our Recommended Pour Over Recipe:
- Use a 1:16 coffee to water ratio.
- Heat water to 200º.
- Pour about 50g of water over your coffee to "bloom".
- Stir or swirl the coffee + water slurry to get it even.
- Bloom for :30 seconds.
- At :30 sec, slowly pour water, keeping the entire area evenly wet.
- Aim to reach your final target weight around 2:30.
- Stir or swirl the coffee + water slurry for an even draw down.
- Let water fully drain.
