Tasting Notes: Citrus, Cranberry, Toasted Almond, Chocolate
The naturally decaffeinated coffee you've been looking for! Full of flavor, this award-winning decaf comes to us directly from our friends at Azahar Coffee in Colombia.
What makes our decaf coffee so good?
Two things—the incredible coffee we start with and the unique sugarcane decaffeinating process.
Most decaffeinated coffees use low grade green coffee to start with but ours is sourced through the same farms as our single origin coffees, ensuring it is naturally tasty from the beginning.
Then, it is decaffeinated using the sugarcane process. This natural process begins by fermenting molasses derived from sugarcane to create ethanol which is the base of the wash used to gently extract the caffeine from the bean. And because sugarcane is so readily available in Colombia, this process occurs close to the farm, eliminating the numerous shippings that usually take place with decaf coffees.

Brewing Tips
Use Filtered Water
Contaminants and chemicals in your water can make your coffee taste muddy, and they can also be harsh on your equipment. Using filtered (but not distilled) water helps your coffee taste clean, bright, and naturally sweet. And while there are a lot of expensive water filters on the market, we find that an inexpensive, basic carbon filter does a great job filtering water for coffee brewing.
Grind Fresh
We all love the smell of freshly ground coffee but all that beautiful aroma should be going into your cup and not just into the air. That is why we recommend grinding your coffee immediately before brewing so that all that goodness isn’t lost. The sooner you use your coffee after grinding, the more flavorful your cup will be preventing it from tasting stale and flat. And for best grinding results, we highly recommend using a quality burr grinder.
Coffee to Water Ratio
The amount of coffee beans you use can have a big impact on taste. Too much coffee, and the cup can taste heavy and sour. Too little coffee, and the cup can taste thin and bitter. We recommend using a 1:16 ratio by weight, 60g of coffee for every 1,000g of water which is about 2 Tbsp of coffee for every 8oz of water. Our preference is to use a scale to weigh coffee and water for accuracy and consistency, all of which can make a big difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
How will I know my order has shipped or is ready for pick-up?
You will receive three email notifications. The first one notifies you that your order will be processed in three days, giving you the opportunity to make any changes. The second one when your payment has been processed and your coffee is queued for roasting. And the final notification when your item has shipped or is ready for pick-up. (Pick up customers please note our Roastery is closed most federal holidays.)
Can I change or cancel my order?
You bet. Sign into your account anytime to make changes or even pause it. You can also make changes to any order when you receive the first notification email. At that time, you can choose to skip that shipment or even add extra bags, coffee filters, etc.
How do you determine which coffee will be included?
We choose all of our coffees based on seasonality. We work closely with our farmers to ensure we are getting coffees fresh off harvest and processing. As soon as we receive a new coffee, we spend a couple weeks profiling the coffee - developing a flavor profile that we think brings out the best characteristics in the coffee - and then you'll see it in your orders not long after that.
Can my coffee be ground?
We do not offer ground coffee. We believe in giving you the best, freshest product possible and one of the ways we accomplish this is by sending whole bean coffee.
Do you offer espresso blends?
All of our coffees work great as espresso as well as brewed coffee—in fact, we use our single origin coffee exclusively at our own bar. However, if you are specifically looking for an espresso blend, try out our new one in our line of blends —Tiger Stripe Espresso Blend.
What is your roasting / shipping schedule?
We roast Monday through Friday (with minor exceptions for holidays). Subscriptions are charged and queued for roasting at noon the day prior to their roast day. We generally ship orders the same day they're roasted.
What sizes do you offer?
All of our single origin coffee comes in 12 ounce bags. If you are interested in larger volumes, check out our blends which come in 2lb options.
Can I skip a shipment?
Sure thing. Just log into your account and you can adjust your delivery schedule. You can also email orders@joebeanroasters.com and we'd be happy to make any desired modifications for you.
