Twende, meaning “Let’s Go” in Swahili, is a phrase meant to motivate a group to action. It is also the perfect name for our latest coffee sourced through Mighty Peace Coffee. Created from micro-farms located in the southern Lake Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it was put together under the watchful eye of Linda Mugaruka (pictured above, left), Congo’s first female Q Grader. She is also the Quality Officer for Mighty Peace Coffee—a social impact organization, working to rebuild a vibrant, quality-focused coffee business in the DRC.
Like a warm, summer fruit cobbler, this coffee is layered with tart, sweet notes of apricot and nectarine, topped with creamy vanilla flavors and a subtle crisp, melon finish. It is a great example of the kind of complex, high-scoring coffees coming out of the African Great Lakes region. We are incredibly excited to have this amazing coffee in our lineup!
The unique geography and rich volcanic soil of the African Great Lakes region where Lake Kivu is located contributes to the complexity of the coffees grown there. It is also an area known for Bourbon varietal plants, a cultivar long admired for their tendency toward complex aromatics and deep sweetness.
