Congo paddling

This fruit-forward beauty comes from the Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), an area rich with fertile, volcanic soil and bathed in plentiful sunshine and rainfall. Kivu province is also home to Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes. Lake Kiuv drains into the Congo river and in turn, feeds the Congo basin; the second largest rainforest in the world, a key carbon sink as well as one of the richest sources of biodiversity on earth.

Congo coffee plant nursery

Even though this area is wealthy in natural resources, specialty coffee production and exportation has faced numerous challenges over the years due numerous civil wars ravaging the land. The Virunga Coffee Company, established in 2011, began with a vision to help rebuild coffee quality and stability in the region through hands-on farmer education and investment in local infrastructure such as roads, and bridges.

Congo sorters

One of the major areas of improvement has been the building of multiple, quality-focused coffee washing stations. The Hutwe Washing station, where this coffee comes from, is located in an area long since plagued with rebel fighting but the production of quality coffee has slowly been bringing hope and stability to the region.

Hutwe washing

Ripe cherries are delivered to the washing station from area farmers for sorting and flotation to select only the ripest for processing. Cherries are then de-pulped, fermented for 18-24 hours and then washed in clean water channels. Finally, they are dried on raised beds for 12-18 days.

Hutwe sorting

We are incredibly proud to be partnering with the Virunga Coffee Company to support their important work in the revival of specialty coffee in DRC. This particular coffee is a great example of the unique, fruit-forward goodness that comes from such a naturally rich region. Notes of raspberry, blueberry, lime, and bergamot orange blend perfectly together in a hot or iced coffee.
